I know it’s been awhile since I posted here. The last two weeks have been really busy with this crazy huge project I started, and I wanted to write about it a bit here, just in case there are any readers who haven’t been bombarded with my Twitter stream about it lately.
I’m doing a 2012 calendar as a fundraiser for the BC Cancer Foundation. The “Van Island Runners for Cancer” calendar will feature runners from Victoria and Nanaimo, at some great running locations. It will also have local races listed in the calendar, to help with planning race schedules. All proceeds will go to the Foundation.
Firstly, I have to give credit where it is due — the idea for this came largely from the “Babes Go Bare Calendar” I was in last year. I had so much fun being in the calendar that I didn’t want it to not happen again. When it didn’t look like it was, I started to wonder if I could organize it. I went to Twitter and asked what people thought.
One of my Twitter friends asked if I was doing the nude thing again. I had thought about doing a running calendar instead, but I didn’t think that I would get enough people interested. Just to see, I asked my running friends on Twitter if any of them would be interested in a running calendar. By the end of the day, I had enough models for each month of the year.
So now I’m in the process of taking this from idea to reality. I have the photo shoots scheduled, one day in Nanaimo, and three days in Victoria. In a feat of scheduling magic, I was able to find days that worked for almost everyone. I have a full crew for Nanaimo, and almost a full crew for Victoria. I also have a fabulous person doing the layout.
Running has done so much for me (if you want to know how much, I wrote a whole blog about it) that I want others to love it as much as I do. I want to show that runners come in all shapes and sizes, have all levels of fitness, and do it for all different reasons. Although I often joke about being a “real” runner, there really is no such thing. If you run, you’re a runner. It really is that simple.
Speaking of runners, I can’t even express how much I appreciate the generosity of the Victoria (and Nanaimo) running community. Without the help and support of my fellow runners, many of whom I haven’t even met in real life, I would never have gotten this project off the ground. You’re the reason why I can do this calendar and you’re the reason why I want to.
